PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP – ESAD.CR

Paper pulp workshop at Moinho do Papel, a handicraft workshop for making recycled paper and/or cotton paper: cutting or tearing newspaper; crushing the mixture of cut newspaper and water to make pulp; making the sheets and drying them on a clothesline. Moinho do Papel’s paper pulp workshop aims to demonstrate the handmade paper produced at the mill, combining environmentally friendly practices, inviting people to recycle paper and understand how to use it in a creative and sustainable way. It is an engaging practical experience, allowing participants to appreciate the importance of reusing materials and creativity in the use of paper.

The Paper Mill is located on the old Rua da Fábrica, now Rua Roberto Ivens, on the left bank of the River Lis, close to the urban centre of the city, which dates back to the 13th century. It is a museum space, linked to the learning of traditional arts and crafts related to paper and cereal and is the result of a recovery and rehabilitation project carried out by a multidisciplinary team (from the renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira to the municipality’s technicians), with the aim of preserving the memory of traditional arts and crafts inherent to this socio-cultural heritage, namely the milling of cereal (maize, wheat and rye), the manufacture of olive oil and the production of paper.
