Biophilia

Canan Salman

BOOK

Under the scope of a grant awarded by Tübitak (The Scıentıfıc And Technologıcal Research Councıl of Turkey), visiting researcher Canan Salman carried out her doctoral research over the course of a year at ESAD CR, entitled “Sustainable Ceramic Art Works For Interior With Biophilic Design Principles From Seed Form”.

As a result of his desire to share his experience, this book has been produced, featuring the body of work carried out over the course of the year, and presented last May at the BIOPHILIA exhibition, part of the Buon Giorno Ceramiche event in which ESAD CR participates every year.

The book also includes records of the workshop “Transformation: From Seed Form to Ceramics with Biophilic Design Principles” organised by the author for the school’s students.

Biophilia

EXHIBITION
FROM MAY 16TH TO 21ST, 2024
ATRIUM OF EP1 – ESAD.CR

This exhibition has two important questions.
How does art provide an opportunity to establish a bond between the artist and society in order to create a natural ethic and sustainable environmental awareness? How does the established connection become the subject of the artwork?
For this reason, by using biophilic Design parametrrs, the concept of biophilia and the problem of arkhé are intended to be a source in artistic production of works for this purpose. Biophilia is a product of our understanding of life that we have brought with us from time immemorial. It is a new title in the field of design with its effect of making most people happier and more productive in a green environment. By bringing nature indoors, it is an approach that provides sustainable well-being for people. Research into biophilia and biophilic design has recently gained momentum thanks to increased global communication. The wide range of benefits it offers has led to the use of biophilic design in hospitals, schools and workplaces. The concept of biophilia, which is a candidate for any field related to design, also shows its presence in the field of biophilic art.
In the exhibition, the seed form is expressed through art ceramics in the context of sustainablility, using biophilic design principles. Living elements will become part of the art form and the differences brought about by the growth of the plant will allow process art to come into play. The aim is also to show the change and sustainability of artistic aesthetics.
Firma in nature can be interpreted directly or those firms can become the subject of art by evaluating their place in the natural environment or natural processes. The transformation of the seed into a plant, the growth, development, death and reseeding of that plant has its own unique place in this process.
The seed form was chosen as the starting point for expressing the sustainable side of life. The conceptual starting point is Anaxagoras’ “spermata”, the cause of the seed, one of the philosophical problems of the arché. The sustainability of the seed concept was supported by the philosophy of Heraclitus and Hegel. The biophilic design principles underlying the artistic wirks were applied in the contexts of direct experience of nature, indirect experience of nature and experience of nature as space.
Therefore, by using the parameters of biophilic design; the concept of biophilia and the problem of arkhé can be a source in artistic production in the context of sustainability and can be considered and developed as a starting point in the production of works for this purpose. In the exhibition will show how biophilic design principles can contribute to sustainable human well-being through ceramic art. In the context of biophilic art, which is an emerging concept, ceramic forms created with designs that allow nature to exhibit itself is presented.
