RESEARCH SEMINAR OPEN CLASSES
NOVEMBER 5TH OF 2024, 2PM
ROOM 34 EP.1 – ESAD.CR

The central aim of this class is to get students to question the social and political function of art and the theory it produces. Alexandra do Carmo’s projects will be presented and discussed, and the social function of art in relation to institutional and public space will be addressed. In her work, the studio acts as a lens through which the social relational space of art is reflected. The works The Steam Shop (or the painter’s studio), Office/Commercial, Tudo Foi Captado (mesmo os movimentos do cabrito), Studio Socialis, O Ateliê Verde no IC19 and Ter um dedo preso para criar a tensão and Campanha Linha Vermelha with the student climate strike in 2020 will be shown. Other aspects include the relationship between drawing and cinema, and memory as an artistic tool for intervention.

Alexandra do Carmo‘s practice is focused on the studio as a conceptual field of study—the studio as a lens through which to investigate and expose the dynamics, conditions and limits of authorship. Her main area of research is the concept of Artistic Autonomy for Public Use.
